This low-temperature Stirling engine, which can be powered by a hot cup of water, could be a great conversation starter at work and a unique gift for families, friends, or class demonstrations. It is almost ready to run: after installation, simply place it on a cup of hot water or ice water, wait a couple of seconds, and gently flip the wheel, and it will run itself.

The engine's speed depends entirely on the temperature difference between the hot side and the cold side. When using a hot beverage, not only is the engine transferring the beverage's heat to the surrounding air, but there are also constant air currents crossing the top (cold) plate. The differing temperatures will cause the engine to slow or speed up according to the net difference between the two plates.

For some extra fun, you could obtain a USB-powered cup warmer and place the engine on that. After the warmer finally reaches full temperature, the engine will chug along like a champ.

Attention:

1. If the engine is a little noisy, ONLY use a small amount of graphite dry lube or a pencil, which will quiet it down nicely.

2. Do not use oil to lubricate, as it will mix with dust in the air and become an oil-dirt mixture, ultimately increasing the friction and preventing the Stirling engine from running smoothly.

Basically, you can run this engine for up to 20 minutes with a cup of warm water (the engine must be cool). The bigger the temperature difference between the top and bottom plates, the higher the RPM you will get. This works best with a hot cup of water underneath and an ice cube in a plastic bag on the top (there is plenty of room for one ice cube on top).
